The list of sites below contain a selection of prices of products from different countries. More and more supermarkets from all over the world are advertising online so students can compare the price of fresh beans in one or more countries. Specific international price comparisons are a useful way of introducing students to some topics in Economics. These range from the effect of the scarcity of land relative to population on house prices, arbitrage, international comparisons of living standards between countries and purchasing power parity theories,to list a few. Specific comparisons of prices of flats or Ferrari's often communicate basic Economic principles more effectively than general statistical comparisons. Teachers need to use these resources carefully.
A few general sites for international post codes and maps have been included as well as some providing information about different measurement systems. These help students search US sites for say Californian house prices and secondly work out where they are in a country and what they are actually comparing.
Generally the major online providers offer good coverage of cars, real estate and general consumables for a range of countries. MSN and Yahoo are examples. If you can find a site written for expatriates living in the country whose prices you are investigating, these often provide extremely useful information about real estate and food costs.
The sites below contain geeral reference information to assist students in actually finding current prices in other countries online.
Sites useful for working out how many square metres in 10 square yards etc.
Search Engines with regional directories or very useful for this kind of search
Set out below are the regional directories of Yahoo and MSN. Most of these contain online shopping malls and links to major retailers in each of their respective regions. This allows you to compare prices for similar products in these countries to Australia. When making price comparisons with other countries it is useful to try and get more than one quote from more than one source and try and establish what is a representative price for that product in your country. Sometimes this may not be possible. Secondly try and compare like products or at least similar ones. Sometimes this may not be possible as the prices for the products you want are simply not available online. If you visit sites in another language it is often possible to work out the price of the product you want by examining the pictures. If this fails try and find someone who speaks the language from the country you are investigating and get them to interpret.
Selected car sites from some other countries.
Students can often link to local dealers in Toyota and Ford cars in other countries and compare prices in these countries to Australian ones. Students may well need to search for a dealers actual site in order to procure local pricing information. This is not always easy to find.
Price Check Tokyo contains details of food items.
Students may compare prices of their favourite fast foods between at least
two countries. Some countries do not publish local prices online at the moment
but will do so in time.
