All teachers should read the notes on technical issues. Using video in the classroom brings with it a host of technical issues that can easily derail the best-planned lesson. There are a number of factors teachers need to take into account when using this approach to teaching economics.
One of the biggest reasons students take a lot of time with this kind of project is that do not really understand the ideas they are meant to be using. This means they have trouble finding and identifying relevant material. Students need a basic understanding of the topic before they can compile a decent Producer Presentation about it. If they have to work out too many ideas as they go along, it will take up a great deal of time.
IT skills of students influence how long these projects take. There is no easy answer to this question. Some groups of students will use producer quickly and well without any training. Others will need a great deal of support. If your students lack IT skills either use a tutorial with them or choose another activity. Otherwise you will end up spending a lot of time teaching them how to use the software.
Research tasks on the web using video can be extremely time consuming
if students have to collect and record the streaming video themselves.
Provide them with all the key resources they need. It is not practical
for students to record streaming video on most school networks in any
case. In this way they will spend most of their time thinking about how
to edit and piece it together rather than how where to find material.
Frequently I find using tactics like jumbled presentations, incomplete
presentations and editing tasks allow students to build a meaningful presentation
in a short space of time. These can be easily adapted to suit the needs
of your students.
